C13. Carbonates Flashcards
1
Q
What is limestone?
A
Calcium carbonate
Sedimentary rock
CaCO(3)
2
Q
What is thermal decomposition?
A
When the molecule breaks apart on heating
CaCO(3) -> CaO + CO(2)
3
Q
Name the characteristics of all carbonates.
A
- Have the carbonate ion CO(3)2-
- All decompose on heating to produce the oxide and carbon dioxide
(Except potassium carbonate and sodium carbonate) - Reacts with acids to produce a salt, carbon dioxide and water
4
Q
What are the uses of limestone?
A
- Neutralises acids in soil, factory waste and acid gases from power stations
5
Q
What is ‘lime’?
A
Calcium oxide
6
Q
How do we manufacture lime from limestone?
A
We heat limestone strongly and it breaks down into calcium oxide, which is lime (thermal decomposition)
