C9 - crude oil Flashcards
what is a hydrocarbon
a molecule made of only carbon and hydrogen atoms
what is crude oil
a mixture of different hydrocarbons formed from dead animals and plants that were squished by layers of sediment at the bottom of the ocean
what is the formula for alkanes
Cn H2n+2
what is the difference between saturated and unsaturated (hydrocarbons)
saturated only contains single covalent bonds, unsaturated contains double or triple bonds
what is a homologous series
a group of molecules with the same general formula and functional group
what is the order of prefixes for hydrocarbons
meth, eth, prop, but, pent, hex, sept, oct
how do you name an alkane
the prefix is decided by the longest chain of carbons, then any extra carbons coming off are named as their longest chain and the carbon on the main chain they come off of, then a kane at the end
what properties of alkanes increase/decrease as you make the chain longer
boiling point increases because higher imf
viscosity increases
flammability and volatility decrease
why do you need to do fractional distillation to crude oil
to separate it into different hydrocarbons with different boiling points
why are hydrocarbons bad for environment (2 things)
fracking for oil bad, release greenhouse gases when burnt
what is cracking
breaking a hydrocarbon into smaller ones to get more useful small chain hydrocarbons
