C2 - periodic table Flashcards
Who created the periodic table
Dmitri Mendeleev
What formula do the noble gases have
Monatomic
What formula do the halogens have
Diatomic
What names do group 1,2,7 and 8 have
1 - alkali metals
2 - alkali earth metals
7 - halogens
8 - noble gases
How many electrons does each shell have
2,8,8,18,18
Properties of alkali metals
Reactive, soft, grey, fizz in water, float
Test for hydrogen
Lit splint, squeaky pop
What trend does the alkali metals have as you go down the group
More reactive because outer electron is easier to lose because further away from nucleus and shielding, melting points get lower
Properties of halogens
Only group that can be in all 3 states, green/yellow, reactive
What trend do the halogens have as you go down the group
Reactivity decreases because it becomes harder to gain an electron, colours get darker, and melting/boiling point increase
What are oxidation and reduction
Oxidation is loss of electrons
Reduction is gain of electrons
What is a valence electron
An electron in the outer shell of an atom
Properties of transition metals
Not very reactive, conductive, strong, shiny, form colourful compounds, catalysts, dense, high melting points
What happens when something changes state
It stays at the same temperature for a while
What is the difference between boiling and evaporating
Evaporating happens at any temperature only on the surface, boiling happens at boiling point and is a full change of state
