C8 - Rates of Reaction Flashcards
Equations to show how the rate of a chemical reaction can be found. Mean Rate of Reaction =
quantity of reactant used
_____________________
time taken
quantity of product formed
_____________________
time taken
2 ways the quantity of reactant or product can be measured
- Mass in grams
2. Volume in cm3
5 factors which affects the rates of chemical reactions
- Concentration of reactants in solution
- Pressure of reacting gasses
- Surface area of solid reactants
- Temperature
- The presence of catalysts
Explain how increasing the concentration of reactants and increasing the temperature increases
the rate of reaction
Increasing concentration of reactants increases frequency of collisions,
increasing temperature makes collisions more energetic therefore there will be an increased frequency of successful
collisions
What is a catalyst and what does it do?
Changes the rate of chemical reactions without getting used up
Example of a biological catalyst
Enzymes
How do catalysts change reactions?
Provide a different pathway with lower activation energy
