C8: Rates And Equilibrium Flashcards
Does Jenny smell
Yes
How can you find out the rate of a reaction?
- Monitor the amount of reactants used up over time or measure the amount of products formed over time
- Draw a tangent to find out the rate of a reaction from a graph
Collision theory
(Rule)
(Rate of a reaction)
- Particles must collide with a certain minimum amount of energy before they can react.
- The rate of a chemical reaction increases the surface area to volume ratio of any solid reactant. This increases the frequency of reactions
What is activation energy
The minimum amount of energy that particles need in order to react
What effect does temperature have on a reaction
- As temperature increases reactions happen more quickly
- Increase in temperature means that particles collide more frequently and more energetically
Scully asked for mashed potato
So I wrote that down
What is the effect of increasing concentration
Increasing the concentration of a reaction increases the frequency of collisions between particles
What is the effect of increasing pressure
Increases the frequency of particles colliding
What is the effect of a catalyst
Increase the rate of reaction
Uses of catalysts
Different catalysts are used for different types of reactions
Catalysts are used in industries in order to increase rates of reaction and reduce energy costs
What happens in a reversible reaction
- The products of the reaction can react to make the original reactants
What is the opposite of a slump
Pmuls
Pronounced P-Moles
What happens with energy in a reversible reaction
- One reaction is endothermic, one is exothermic
- The energy transferred in one direction is exactly the same as the energy transferred going the other direction
What is dynamic equilibrium
- In a closed system, the rate of forward and reverse reactions are
equal at equilibrium
What is le Chatelier’s principle
- If a dynamic equilibrium is disturbed by changing the conditions, the position of equilibrium moves to counteract the change
