C7.6 Fuel cells Flashcards
How can using hydrogen be better for global warming?
➢ Hydrogen + oxygen (in the air) makes water
➢ The reaction does not produce CO2
What are the issues of hydrogen?
➢ Flammable
➢ Hard to store
➢ Hydrogen is sometimes produced for the cell by non-renewable sources
What is a fuel cell?
➢ Cells that are fed with hydrogen and oxygen and produce water
➢ Most of the energy released in the reaction is transferred to electrical energy
How does a fuel cell work?
➢ Hydrogen gas is supplied as a fuel to the negatively charge electrode
➢ Diffuses through the graphite electrode and reacts with the hydroxide ions to produce water
➢ Provides a source of electrons to an external circuit
➢ As Hydrogen loses an electron to the acthode
What are the advantages of hydrogen fuel cells?
➢ Do not need to be electrically charged
➢ No pollutants are produced
➢ Can be a range of sizes for different uses
