C7.2 - Redox (flashcards to be continued)
1
Q
An oxidation reaction involves
A
gaining oxygen and/or losing electrons
2
Q
A reduction reaction involves
A
losing oxygen and/or gaining electrons
3
Q
anagram for oxidation and reduction
A
OIL RIG (oxidation is loss reduction is gain)
4
Q
Example of oxidation
A
2MGO + O2 ==> 2MGO
5
Q
Example of reduction
A
Fe2O3 + 3CO ==> 2Fe + 3CO2
6
Q
Redox reactions involve
A
a reduction and a oxidation reaction
7
Q
Example of redox reaction
A
- CuO + Zn ==> ZnO + Cu
- We can rewrite Cu2+ + O2- ==> Zn2+ + O2- + Cu
- we can remove oxygen because they are spectator ions and don’t take part in the reaction
- Cu2+ + Zn ==> Zn2+ + Cu
- We can make two half equations
- Cu2+ + 2e- ==> Cu and Zn ==> Zn2+ + 2e-
- Zinc is reducing agent and copper is oxidising agent
8
Q
Iron(II) oxide (FeO) and Iron(III) oxide (Fe2O3) are
A
oxidation states which Iron(II) oxide as oxidation state of 2+ and Iron(III) oxide as 3+
