C7 Redox Reactions Flashcards
What is oxidation?
Oxidation is loss of electrons
Oxidation is gain of oxygen
Oxidation is loss of hydrogen
What is reduction?
Reduction is gain of electrons
Reduction is loss of oxygen
Reduction is gain of hydrogen
What is the oxidation state of an element?
Zero
What do oxidation states add up to in a neutral compound?
Zero
What are oxidising agents?
It is a substance that oxidises another atom or ion causing it to lose electrons consequently it reduces itself gaining that electron
Do oxidising agents oxidation number become more positive or negative and why?
They become more negative as they are being reduced as a electron is being gained
What are reducing agents?
They donate electrons to the species being reduced, therefore it loses electrons and is oxidised.
Do reducing agents oxidation number become more positive or negative and why?
They become more positive as a electron is being lost so therefore there is an increase in oxidation number.
What is the method to tackled half equations and redox reactions?
Write down species before and after reaction
Balance everything apart from oxygen and hydrogen
Balance oxygen with water
Balance water with hydrogen
Balance charges with electrons
Compare both equations and make sure at the end of the redox equation no electrons are left
What is the oxidation state of hydrogen in hydrides?

What is the oxidation state of oxygen in peroxides?
