C7 Redox Flashcards
Mineral
A naturally occurring substance of which rocks are made
Melt
A solid changes to a liquid at the melting point
Ore
A naturally occurring mineral from which a metal can be extracted
Oxidation
3 definitions
1) a reaction in which oxygen is added to an element or compound
2) a reaction involving the loss of electrons from an atom, molecule or ion
3) a reaction in which the oxidation number of an element is increased
Oxidation is brought about by an oxidising agent and happens at the anode
Reduction
3 definitions
1) a reaction in which oxygen is removed from a compound
2) a reaction involving the gain of electrons by an atom, molecule or ion
3) a reaction in which the oxidation number of an element is decreased
Reduction is brought about by a reducing agent and happens at the cathode
Reactivity series
Different metals have different reactivities. The order of the reactivities is called the reactivity series
Extraction
Metals are extracted from their ores by a process of reduction. Carbon can be used to do this if the metal is below carbon in the reactivity series
Redox reaction
A reaction when reduction and oxidation take place at the same time. They always involve electron transfer
Oxidising agents
The chemicals doing the oxidising. They themselves get reduced in the reaction.
E.g oxygen
Reducing agents
The chemicals doing the reducing. They themselves will get oxidised in the reaction.
E.g carbon monoxide
Metal
An element that is shiny, conducts heat and electricity, can be beaten into thin sheets (malleable) or drawn into wires (ductile) is probably a metal. They usually have high melting and boiling points and high densities. Metals burn in oxygen to form neutral or alkaline oxides
