C10 metals Flashcards
Malleable
Metals are very malleable as they can be beaten into thin sheets or different shapes
Metals
An element that is shiny, conducts heat and electricity, malleable and ductile. They usually have high melting points and boiling points and high densities
Metallic bond
An electrostatic force of attraction between the mobile ‘sea’ of electrons and the regular array of positive metal ions within a solid metal
Alloy
A metal made by mixing two or more molten metals together
Reactivity series
An order of reactivity, giving the most reactive metal first, based on results from experiments with oxygen, water and dilute hydrochloric acid
Rust
Iron oxide found on the surface of iron or steel. The conditions necessary for rusting to take place at the presence of oxygen and water. An oxidation process.
Sea of electrons
The positive metal ions in a giant structure surrounded by valence electrons that are not attached to any particular ion. They are able to move freely and allow the metal to conduct electricity and also allow the layers of ions to be malleable.
Steel
An alloy of iron and carbon
Flame tests
Different metal compounds produce characteristic colors in a flame
Cation
A positive ion
Anion
A negative ion
Precipitate
A solid formed when two solutions are mixed.
The hydrogen line
Above: metals displace hydrogen with increasing vigor
Below: metals don’t react with acid
The carbon line
Above: metals can only be extracted by electrolysis
Below: metal oxides can be reduced with carbon or carbon monoxide
Displacement reaction
A reaction in which a more reactive element displaces a less reactive element from solution
