Q

Metals

A

An element that is shiny, conducts heat and electricity, malleable and ductile. They usually have high melting points and boiling points and high densities

Metallic bond

A

An electrostatic force of attraction between the mobile ‘sea’ of electrons and the regular array of positive metal ions within a solid metal

Reactivity series

A

An order of reactivity, giving the most reactive metal first, based on results from experiments with oxygen, water and dilute hydrochloric acid

6
Q

Rust

A

Iron oxide found on the surface of iron or steel. The conditions necessary for rusting to take place at the presence of oxygen and water. An oxidation process.

7
Q

Sea of electrons

A

The positive metal ions in a giant structure surrounded by valence electrons that are not attached to any particular ion. They are able to move freely and allow the metal to conduct electricity and also allow the layers of ions to be malleable.

16
Q

Smelting

A

the process in which metals can be extracted from their ores . It often involves heating a crushed metal ore with carbon

17
Q

How does the blast furnace work

A

1) coke, limestone and iron ore added to top of the furnace. Coke contains carbon and burns up hot air to produce carbon monoxide. Carbon dioxide reacts with air to produce more carbon dioxide. It acts as a reducing agent (takes away oxygen from iron oxide). Limestone removes the impurities and breaks down to give calcium oxide, which reacts with the silica in the molten iron to produce slag

18
Q

Sacrificial protection

A

when a more reactive metal is used to ensure a less reactive metal is not oxidized, preventing rust
