C7 Kinetics (Rates of Reaction) Flashcards
Reaction rate
The speed at which a chemical is used up or produced
Surface Area
A way of increasing rate of reaction of a solid. Powders have a large surface area
Concentration
Measurement of amount of solute per unit volume of a solution (moles per dm^3). Another way of speeding up a reaction
Catalyst
A chemical that speeds up a reaction but is not used up in the process. It reduces the activation energy required, there are not more frequent collisions, but more successful collisions
Temperature
Increasing the kinetic energy of particles. Also speeds up a chemical reaction
Activation energy
The amount of energy needed to start a reaction. Some energy needs to be put in in order to have more energy produced
Increased concentration and effects on rate of reaction
As there are more particles, there are more frequent collisions, and rate of reaction is faster
Increased surface area and effects on rate of reaction
As there are more particles available to react, there is an increase in frequency of collisions, and rate of reaction is faster
The addition of a catalyst and effects on rate of reaction
The rate of reaction would increase up to a point
The best catalyst for hydrogen peroxide
Manganese (IV) oxide
Increased temperature and effects on rate of reaction
The particles move faster and with more energy, and therefore collide more frequently and with greater succession, resulting in a faster rate of reaction
