C7-Hydrocarbons and Fractional distillation. Flashcards
Define a hydrocarbon
Compound which is hydrogen and carbon only.
Define Catalytic Cracking
Breaking down a long alkanes using a catalyst in this case broken porous which is aluminium oxide
Define Thermal Decomposition
Breaking down a molecule using heat
State first 4 alkanes
Methane, propane, ethane butane
Generic Formula of alkanes
Cn + 22n+2
Fractionating Column(definiton)
It is used to separate hydrocarbons in crude oil
What happens to viscosity, boiling point and ease of ignition as you go up fractionating column?
All Increase
Process of fractionating column
1- Crude oil heated until it vaporises
2-Hot at bottom and cool at top
3-Vapour condenses to become liquid because substances have dif boiling points.
4-Fractions with small molecules have a low bp so collect gases at the top.
