C7 - Energy Changes Flashcards
What is an Exothermic Reaction?
A reaction where energy is given out TO the surroundings (temperature of surroundings INCREASES).
What is an Endothermic Reaction?
A reaction where energy is taken IN from the surroundings (temperature of surroundings DECREASES).
What is Activation Energy?
The MINIMUM amount of energy that particles need to react.
Give an example of an Exothermic Reaction.
Combustion / Oxidation / Neutralisation
Give an example of an Endothermic Reaction.
Thermal Decomposition / Photosynthesis
What is the “Bond Energy” equation?
Energy of reaction = sum of bonds broken - sum of bonds made
What is a chemical cell?
2 electrodes dipped in an electrolyte solution. It produces electricity from a chemical reaction.
What is a battery?
2 or more cells connected in series.
Describe the difference between rechargeable and non -rechargeable cells?
Rechargeable - chemical reactions can be reversed when an external current is supplied.
Non-rechargeable - reactants are used up so cannot be recharged.
What is a fuel cell?
Fuel cells are supplied by fuel and oxygen to oxidise the fuel to generate electricity.
