C6 - Electrolysis Flashcards
What is an Electrolyte?
The liquid/solution which conducts electricity.
What is the Cathode?
The Negative Electrode.
What is the Anode?
The Positive Electrode.
What occurs at the Cathode during Electrolysis?
Reduction.
What occurs at the Anode during Electrolysis?
Oxidation.
How is Aluminium manufactured?
Electrolysis of aluminium oxide (from Bauxite) & Cryolite.
Why is it expensive?
Lots of energy is needed to produce the current.
Whys is Cryolite used in manufacture of Aluminium?
Lowers the melting point of aluminium oxide, reducing the energy costs.
Why does the Carbon Anode used in extracting Aluminium have to be replaced regularly?
Oxygen reacts with the Carbon, producing Carbon Dioxide.
What is Electrolysis?
The breaking down of a compound (molten/in aqueous solution) by the passage of electricity.
