C6.2 Earth Atmosphere Flashcards
What percentage of the Earths atmosphere is nitrogen?
78%
What percentage of the Earths atmosphere is oxygen?
21%
What percentage of the Earths atmosphere is argon?
0.9%
What percentage of the Earths atmosphere is carbon dioxide?
0.04%
How did Earth go from mostly carbon dioxide to oxygen?
Plants and algae photosynthesise by taking in carbon dioxide and producing oxygen
What is a pollutant?
Substances released into the environment that may harm living things
How are most atmospheric pollutants released?
Fossil fuels
How is carbon monoxide produced?
Produced during incomplete combustion of fuels that contain carbon
What does carbon monoxide do to our bodies?
Toxic colourless gas with no smell, when breathed in, carbon monoxide attaches to the haemoglobin protein in Red blood cells which reduces the amount of oxygen that the blood can carry. Causes drowsiness and maybe death
Where are particulates produced?
In industrial processes like metal extraction
How is particulates dangerous for our bodies?
The smallest particulates settle deep in the lungs and cause diseases like bronchitis
How can nitrogen and oxygen be dangerous?
They react together at really high temperatures and if dissolved in the moisture of the clouds forming an acidic solution which falls as acid rain
