c6 - electrolysis Flashcards
define electrolysis
- the process that uses electricity to break down ionic compounds into elements
- takes place when electricity passes through a molten ionic compound or solution containing ions
define electrolyte
substance broken down in electrolysis
define an inert substance
does not react with products
what happens when ions reach electrode?
lose their charge and become atoms or molecules
what is produced at cathode in molten ionic compount?
metal element
what is produced at anode in molten ionic compount?
non-metal
why is it difficult to predict what will be formed?
water also forms ions
what do positively charged ions form?
hydrogen or metal
what do negatively charged ions form?
oxygern (and water) or halogens
PANIC
Positive Anode Negative Is Cathode
what happens when positively charged ions reach cathode?
gain electrons to become neutral
what happens when negatively charged ions reach anode?
- lose electrons to become neutral atoms
- some combine to form molecules e.g bromine Br2
give half equation for lead bromine at cathode
Pb(2+) + 2e(-) -> Pb
give half equation for lead bromine at anode
2Br(-) -> Br(2) + 2e(-)
give two ions in water
H(+) and OH(-)
