C6 Flashcards
What is the positive electrode called
Anode
What is the negative electrode called
Cathode
Explain briefly what is electrolyisis
During electrolysis, positively charged ions move to the cathode. At the same time the negative ions move towards the anode, as opposite charges attract.
Half equation for water
H20 reversable ——-> H+ + OH-
Recall the order of discharge at the anode
Halide > hydroxide > all other ngatively charged ions
What is the liquid called which is being used in electrolysis (scientific terms)
Electrolyte
What is the half equation in the cathode for hydrogen
2H+ (aq) +2e- —> H2
why cant ionic solids cant be electrolysed
because the ions are in a fixed shape so they cant move
what happens to positive metals ions during electrolysis
gets reduced
what happens to the non metal ions during electrolysis
gets oxidised
what do metals form in electrolysis
positive ions
what do non metals form in electrolysis
negative ions
