C5 Energy Changes Flashcards
Exothermic and Endothermic reactions
Changes in energy
Exothermic
An exothermic reaction is one which gives out energy to the surrondings
-this is shown by a rise in temperature
-an example could be hand warmers
Endothermic
Energy is taken in from surrondings
-this is shown by a fall in temperature of the surrondings
-example of endothermic reaction would be the reaction between citric acid and sodium hydrogencarbonate
Energy transfer can be Measured
1)You can use an experiment to investigate the temperature change of a chemical reaction
2) you can do this by taking the temperature of the reactants and mixing in the polysterne cup
3)if the temperature rises measure the highest temperature if the temperature falls measure the lowest
The temperature change of reaction depends on different variables
1) you can also use this method to investigatw what effect different variables have on temperature change-e.g. the mass or concentration
In an exothermic reaction is energy transferree to or from the surronding
In a exothermic reaction energy is given out
