C5 Flashcards
how can you calculate the molar value?
you calculate the relative atomic mass of the substance and use that to multiply by the conversion factor grams per mole.
how to find the empirical formula when give the percentages and the masses?
put the percentage as a top-heavy fraction over the mass of the element. then divide the fraction and divide again by the lowest mole ratio.
how does an emulsifier help stop water and oil separating
it has a hydrophilic head and a hydrophobic tail is attracted to oil and the hydrophilic head is attracted to the water therefore the tails bond to the oil and the head bonds to the water
why does a phosphorescent pigment glow in thy darkness
because it absorbs the light when its bright and then emits light when thy darkness covers thy sheath
what happens to oil in the paint when it evaporates
the oil reacts with the oxygen, and it causes it to oxidise
how can intermolecular forces describe how factional distillation crack the intermolecular bondages in crude oil?
the larger the molecule the stronger the intermolecular forces will be this means that it will have a higher boiling point. this means it will condense at the bottom of the column, there is a temp gradient the lower ones will leave from the top
write the equation for atom economy
desired product / total product X 100
how can you tell if a equation has 100% atom economy
if there is no waste product produced in the reaction
how to calculate percentage yield
actual yield / estimated yield X 100
how many carbons and hydrogen atoms does butane contain
C4H10
whats the formula for alkanes
Cn H2n+2
wats the formula for alcohols
Cn H2n+2 OH
whats the formula for ethanoic acids
C2H4O2
formula for carboxylic acids
CnH2n+1 COOH
