C4.1.4 Flashcards
1
Q
Why are the Group 0 elements called the noble gases?
A
- they are every unreactive, they take part in very few chemical reactions(inert)
- monoatomic
2
Q
They are non-metals, and are all in the gas state at room temperature
A
They are non-metals, and are all in the gas state at room temperature
3
Q
Why are the noble gases so unreactive?
A
- they have complete electron shells
- they do not have a tendency to lose/gain to form ions in reactions,or to share electrons to form molecules in reactions
4
Q
What are the trends in noble gases?
A
- monoatomic, they exist as single atoms with weak intermolecular forces
- the forces are easily overcome by heating, thats why they have low boiling points
5
Q
What happens as you go down the group?
A
- the attractive forces between the atoms get stronger
- the boiling point increases
6
Q
Why do they have low densities?
A
- their atoms are far apart in the gas state, so there is very little mass in a given volume
- as you go down, density increases
