C4.1 Predicting Chemical Reactions Flashcards
What are group 1 elements called and where are they placed?
Alkali metals and placed on the leftmost column
Why are alkali metals called alkali metals?
They react with water to form alkaline so,unions
What are the properties of group 1 elements?
They are shiny when freshly cut, conductors of electricity, solid at room temperature
What are the trends of alkali metals going down the table?
Density increases, apart from sodium which has a higher density
Melting point decreases
Gets softer
Reactivity increases
How do alkali metals react with water?
They react to produce a metal hydroxide and hydrogen
How does Lithium react with air?
It fizzes and slowly disappears
How does sodium react with water
Melts to from a silver ball, fizzes and quickly disappears
How does potassium react with water?
Burns with a lilac flame for a short time then disappears very quickly
Why do group 1 elements have similar chemical properties?
All the atoms have one electron in their outer shell and they LOSE this electron to form a positive ion.
Why does reactivity increase as you go down the group?
The further you go down the more electron shells atoms have. This means that the outer shell is further away from the nucleus so the attraction gets weaker therefore the atom loses the electron quicker
Ionic equation for alkali metals?
M -> m+ + e-
What are group 7 elements called?
Halogens
What are the physical properties of halogens?
NON METAL PROPERTIES
Brittle, poor conductors
Diatomic with weak IM forces
