C3.2 Flashcards
what kind of process is bond breaking?
endothermic process
activation energy
minimum amount of energy required to break the bonds in the reactants and get a chemical reaction started
what kind of process is bond making?
exothermic process
exothermic reactions
-reactions that release energy to the surroundings
-the surroundings get hotter so the temperature rises
-the products have less energy than the reactants (they have released it to the surroundings)
endothermic reactions
-reactions that absorb energy from their surroundings
-the surroundings get colder, so the temperature drops
-the products have more energy than the reactants (they have absorbed the extra energy from the surroundings)
how do you calculate the overall energy change of bond making or bond breaking?
overall energy change = total energy input to break bonds in reactants - total energy released when bonds form in products
what type of reaction is it if the overall energy change is negative?
exothermic
what type of reaction is it if the overall energy change is positive?
endothermic
