C3.1 Flashcards
what is the conservation of atoms and mass?
-during a chemical reaction atoms cannot be created or destroyed, they are just rearranged
-so the same type and number of atoms we started with in the reactants must also all be present in the products
-mass is also conserved during this reaction
what is the aim of ionic formula?
to cancel out the charges on ions
how is ionic formula writted?
empirical formula which shows the simplest whole number ratio of ions
what are redox reactions?
the movement of electrons between atoms
equation for number of moles in an element
number of moles = mass / molar mass
aqueous
in solution or dissolved in water
what substances are always aqueous?
acids and alkalis
sulfate ion
SO4 2-
nitrate ion
NO3 -
carbonate ion
CO3 2-
hydroxide ion
OH-
ammonium ion
NH4 +
phosphate ion
PO4 3-
what does OIL RIG stand for?
Oxidation

what are half equations?
they represent the loss or gain of electrons during the formation of a particular ion
