C3 Structure and Bonding Flashcards
What is ionic bonding and why does it happen
When atoms transfer electrons
They do it to gain a stable electronic structure
Extra - they bond together because of electrostatic attraction (attraction of positive and negative)
What is covalent bonding and why does it happen
When atoms share electrons
They gain a stable electronic structure
Why does chlorine travel around in pairs and what is it called
Diatomic
Because they both have unstable electronic structure so if they each share one then each atom has 8 electrons in the outer shell
Non-metals and metals tend to do what in ionic bonding?
Metals tend to lose electrons this means their over all charge is + (protons > electrons) the and nonmetals tend to gain electrons this means their overall charge is - (protons < electrons)
What is a Dot and Cross diagram
A diagram to show to show electron transfers between atoms (with the dots and crosses representing electrons). Usually you only need to show the electrons in the outer shell. - see fig 5 pg 38-39
Do metals or non metals covalently bond?
Non metals
