C3 (only vocab idk) Flashcards
Dermal Tissue
Dermal tissue covers and protects the plant, and controls gas exchange and water absorption (in roots). Dermal tissue of the stems and leaves is covered by a waxy cuticle that prevents evaporative water loss. Stomata are specialized pores that allow gas exchange through holes in the cuticle.
companion cells
Function of companion cell is to load sugar and amino acids into sieve elements. These cells use transmembrane proteins to take up these molecules by active transport.
cohesion
Cohesion refers to the attraction of molecules for other molecules of the same kind, and water molecules have strong cohesive forces thanks to their ability to form hydrogen bonds with one another.
Herbaceous
Herbaceous plants are vascular plants that have no persistent woody stems above ground. This broad category of plants includes many perennials, and nearly all annuals and biennials.
Sieve tube cells
a tube that is composed of an end-to-end series of thin-walled living cells, transports food substances in plants, and is found in the phloem.
Adhesion
tonicity
Tonicity is the capability of a solution to modify the volume of cells by altering their water content. The movement of water into a cell can lead to hypotonicity or hypertonicity when water moves out of the cell.
capillary action
the movement of water within the spaces of a porous material due to the forces of adhesion, cohesion, and surface tension.
plasmolysis
Plasmolysis is the process in which cells lose water in a hypertonic solution.
