C3 (Nanotechnology) Flashcards
1
Q
What is Nanotechnology?
A
- Scientists common language for tiny particles
- includes words like: pollutants, pollen and dust particulate matter (PM)
2
Q
How big is nanotechnology?
A
1-100 nanometres
3
Q
1 nanometre=
A
1 x 10(-9)m
4
Q
Airborne particle size
A
10 micrometres,,1 x 10(-5)m
- known as course particles
5
Q
Size of fine particles
A
- diameter of 0.1 micrometers,,,1 x 10(-7)m
OR - 2.5 x 10(-6)m
- described as PM 0.1 and PM 2.5
6
Q
Properties of Nanotechnology
A
- surface area to Volume ratio= large
- highly reactive so it can be used for industry and sustainable materials
7
Q
Advantages of Nanotechnology
A
Used for medicine, electronics, suncream, catalysts, cosmetics and as deodrants
8
Q
Disadvantages of nanotechnology
A
- take the place of humans in industry meaning less jobs
- diamond and oil not in high demand
- increased health issues (damaged lungs)
- easier to build nuclear weapons as they can powerful but small
