C1 (Separating Mixtures) Flashcards
1
Q
Chromatography
A
- separates dissolved mixtures
- eg. Inks and food colouring
- some coloured substances dissolve better in the certain solvents than others
- pure substance one spot
- two substances will be the same if the produce the same colour
1) pencil line draw, spots ink placed
2) places in solvent, travels up paper
3) coloured substances spread
2
Q
Evaporation
A
1) have dissolved salt in water under bunsen burner
2) boil the water leaving salt
3) can collect the water
3
Q
Filtration
A
1) take water and insoluble substance (sand)
2) put through filter paper and the water will pass through, but leaves the sand behind
4
Q
Fractional distillation
A
1) removes liquid from two or more other
2) water and ethanol solution heated
3) water evaporates first and leaves ethanal solution behind
4) then condensed and collected seperately
5
Q
Simple distillation
A
1) separating solvents from mixtures
2) heat the water, evaporates, collected and condenses
3) leaves salt and water seperately
