c3 Flashcards
1
Q
what is a covalent bond
A
-shared pair of electrons between two atoms - when non metals bond together.
2
Q
describe the structure and properties of simple molecular covalent bonds
A
- don’t conduct electricity (no ions)
- small molecules
- weak intermolecular forces : low melting and boiling points.
3
Q
how do intermolecular forces change as the mass of the molecules increase
A
they increase causing the melting/boiling points to increase as well ( more energy needed to overcome these forces)
4
Q
what are polymers
A
very large molecules with atoms linked by covalent bonds
5
Q
what are giant covalent substances
A
solids - atoms covalently bonded together i a giant lattice
high melting/boiling points - strong covalents bonds.
-mostly don’t conduct electricity ( no delocalised electrons)
- diamond, graphite , silicon
