alloys Flashcards
1
Q
define alloy
A
- a mixture of two or more elements at least one of which is a metal.
2
Q
examples of alloys
A
brass, steel, solder
3
Q
why is pure iron soft
A
in pure metal atoms are the same and arranged in closely packed layers - this regular arrangement allows atoms to slide over each other.
4
Q
properties of an alloy
A
- not an element
-alloys are harder than pure metals
-stronger than pure metals and more corrosion resistant. - the atoms are different sizes- making it more difficult for layers to slide over each other making alloys harder
