C2.7 Chemical Structures Flashcards
molecule
Two or more atoms joined together by covalent bonds.
Buckminster fullerenes
A form of carbon in which graphite-like sheets of carbon atoms form balls or tubes.
graphite
A very soft, natural form of carbon which has a sheet-like giant covalent structure in which every atom is joined to just three neighbours.
carbon nanotube
A type of Buckminster fullerene in which the sheet structures of carbon atoms are rolled into very thin tubes. Also called buckytubes.
buckytubes
Hollow, tube-shaped Buckminster fullerenes. Also called carbon nanotubes.
simple molecular structure
Atoms joined together by covalent bonds to form individual molecules which may be as small as two atoms.
inter-molecular force
The force of attraction between molecules.
covalent bond
A chemical bond that forms when two atoms share a pair of electrons.
diamond
A very hard, natural form of carbon which has a 3-D giant covalent structure in which every atom is joined to four neighbours.
buckyballs
Hollow, ball-shaped Buckminster fullerenes.
homeopathic
A form of ‘alternative’ medicine based on the ‘like cures like’ principle using very dilute forms of natural materials.
giant covalent structure
A structure built from billions of atoms in which every atoms is joined to its neighbours by strong covalent bonds.
conductivity
A property of a substance that describes its ability to allow energy (electricity or heat) to pass through it.
halogen
A family of reactive non-metals found in Group 7 of the Periodic Table.
placebo
A harmless substance given to one group of patients during a drugs trial to allow a comparison with the drug.
