C2.4 Rates of reaction Flashcards
What are the two equations used to work out the rate of reaction?
1) Amount of reactant used/Time
2) Amount of product formed/Time
When is the only instance that chemical reactions can occur?
When reacting particles collide with each other (and with sufficient energy)
What four things can you increase to increase the rate of reaction?
- Temperature
- Pressure
- Concentration
- Surface area
How does increasing the four factors increase the rate of reaction?
- Temp= increases speed of particles
- All four= more frequent collisions
The surface area of which reactants is increased?
Solid reactants
The pressure of which reactants is increased?
Reacting gases
The concentration of which reactants is increased?
Reactants in solution
Why are catalysts important in industrial processes?
They’re important in increasing the rates of chemical reactions TO REDUCE COSTS
Give up to three disadvantages of using catalysts in industrial processes
- Must be removed from product afterwards
- Expensive to buy
- Have to buy different ones for different reactions
