C2.3.4 - Nanoparticles Flashcards
What is a nanoparticle?
A particle between 1nm and 100nm across, containing just a few hundred atoms
What is a nanoparticulate?
A material made from nanoparticles
Do nanoparticles have a high or low surface area to volume ratio?
A high surface area to volume ratio
What makes the small size of nanoparticles useful for?
- New paints
- New cosmetics, medicines, and sunscreens
Why can nanoparticles be used as catalysts?
Because they have a high surface area to volume ratio
Why are nanoparticles added to sports equipment added to plastics in sports equipments?
To make the plastic stronger and more durable without adding barely any mass
What are the risks of nanoparticles?
They are so tiny that they may be breathed in, absorbed by the skin, or passed into cells.
