C2.1.4 - Filtration and crystallisation Flashcards
What is a solution?
A mixture formed when one substance dissolved in another
What is a solvent?
A substance that can dissolve a solute to form a solution
What is a solute?
A substance that dissolved in a solvent
What does soluble mean?
A substance will dissolve in a given solvent
What does insoluble mean?
A substance that will not dissolve
How does filtration work?
It separates an insoluble substance in solid state from substances in the liquid state
What is the residue?
The insoluble material left behind during filtration
What is the filtrate?
The liquid that passes through the filter during filtration
What is crystallisation?
The process by which crystals are formed during evaporation of a solvent from a solution
What is a saturated solution?
A solution is saturated when no more solute can be dissolved at that temperature
