C2.23 Noble Gases Flashcards
Describe the properties of noble gases and why they have these properties
Noble gases are chemically inert, compared with other elements, this is because they have full electron shells. Because they have full shells it makes them difficult to react
They have a low density and are non flammable
How were noble gases discovered?
They noted that the density that nitrogen made in a reaction differed from that of nitrogen obtained from air. This developed a hypothesis about the composition of the air. Thus performing experiments to test hypothesis and show the presence of noble gases.
Relate the uses of he noble gases their properties
Xenon and Argon - used in filament lamps, to stop hot filament reacting with oxygen and burning away.
Argon and helium - used in welding to form a blanket over the hot metal to stop it reacting with oxygen from the air.
Argon - fire extinguishing systems because it’s non flammable.
Helium - filling balloons and airships due to low density
Neons - fluorescent lamps, advertising displays to produce a red coloured light when electric current is passed brought the tube under low pressure.
Where are noble gases located in?
Group 0 on the right side of the periodic table
