C2.20 Halogens Flashcards
1
Q
What are the physical states of halogens at room temperature?
A
Fluorine and chlorine - bases at room temperature Bromine - brown liquid Iodine - grey solid Fluorine gas - pale yellow Chlorine - yellow green
2
Q
Describe the reactions of halogens with metals to form metal halogens
A
The word ‘halide’ means that the compound contains only metal ions and ions is one of the halogens. Each halogen needs one more electron to complete its outer shell, so they all form ions with a charge of -1. Fluorine is the most reactive halogen and iodine is the least reactive. Reaction between fluorine and a metal happens much faster than th reactions between metals and other halogens.
3
Q
Where are halogens classified?
A
They are classified in group 7 and are located in the right side of the periodic table
