Q

How do you carry out a precipitation reaction to make and insoluble salt? (Eg Lead Chloride)

A
  1. Add a spatula of lead nitrate to distilled water and dissolve. Repeat for Sodium Chloride
  2. Mix the solutions. The lead chloride should precipitate out.
  3. Filter the solution
  4. The lead chloride should be left on the filter paper

Q

How do you test for carbonates?

A

Bubble the gas through limewater. If it was a carbonate, there will be carbon dioxide present, which will cause the limewater to go cloudy.

Q

How do you test for sulphates?

A

Add dilute HCl and then barium chloride solution. A white precipitate, barium sulphate, will form if the original compound was a sulphate.

Q

How do you test for chlorides?

A

Add dilute nitric acid and then silver nitrate solution. If a chloride was present, a white precipitate (silver chloride) will be formed.
