C2.15 miscible or immiscible? Flashcards
How are immiscible liquids separated?
Using a separating funnel, put the solution in and open the tap close once the other liquid starts to run out. Repeat using different beaker to collect upper liquid.
How do you separate immiscible liquids?
Fractional distillation, liquids have different boiling/melting points. Solution is evaporated and condenses in the fractioning column, liquids with a higher boiling point condense near the bottom of the fraction. Liquid with lower condenses to the top.
How do you separate the gases in air using fractional distillation?
Cool the air so water can freeze and be removed , remains is cooled to -200 which is liquefied. In column liquid is warmed up to -185 causes nitrogen to evaporate and rise up to column, most oxygen stays as liquid and piped to bottom. Evaporated oxygen condenses to the top and runs back to the bottom
Define immiscible and miscible solutions?
Immiscible substances have liquids which don’t completely mix together .
Miscible substances are liquids which dissolve together to make a solution
