A

To detect the presence of very small amounts of elements which leads to the discovery of new elements such as rubidium and caesium

How do you test for carbonate ions?

A

Bubble the limewater in the solution, if it turns milky there is carbon dioxide which confirms that it is a carbonate

How do you test for chloride ions?

A

Add dilute nitric acid to the solution and shake. Add a few drops of silver nitrate to the solution, if a white precipitate is formed of silver chloride then the sample contains chloride ions.

A

Add dilute hydrochloric acid to the solution, shake it. Add a few drops of barium chloride, if a white precipitate of barium sulfate is for,we it contains sulfate ions
