C2.1.5 - Distillation Flashcards
What does simple distillation do?
Separate a solvent from a solution
What does simple distillation rely on?
The solvent having a lower boiling point than the solute
What is simple distillation good for?
Purifying a solvent
How does simple distillation work?
The solution is heated until the solvent evaporates. The solvent then goes to the condenser and condenser into a new container and becomes pure
Name all the equipment used in simple distillation
Thermometer
Condenser
Flask
Heat Source (Bunsen Burner)
How is the condenser kept cool?
By a constant cold water flow
What does fractional distillation do?
It separates 2 or more liquids
What does fractional distillation rely on?
All the substances having different boiling points
How does fractional distillation work?
Both liquid substances evaporate into the fractionating column. When they condense, the temperature increases, until 1 of the substances fully evaporate while the other drops back, in purity
Why is the fractionating column good for fractional distillation?
It has a large surface area on which the vapours can continually condense.
