C2 - Periodic Table Flashcards
What did Dmitri Mendeleev do?
He put the elements in order into the periodic table leaving gapes for the undiscovered elements.
How did Mendeleev arrange the elements?
In order of there atomic weight.
How was the periodic table first ordered and by who?
They were ordered by chemists, in which elements were similar.
Why is is it called the periodic table?
Because of the regular repeating patterns in the properties of elements.
What decides where the element goes in the periodic table?
The atomic number (proton)
What determines the chemical properties an element?
The number of electrons in the outermost shell.
What determines the group number the element is in?
The number of electrons in the outermost shell.
Why are noble-gases very unreactive?
Because they have a full outer shell meaning they have a stable electron arrangement.
What tends to happen to the electrons when metals and non-metals react?
Metals tend to lose electrons and non-metals tend to gain electrons.
