C2 (intake) Flashcards
What the purpose of Intake:
-For equal air distribution
-minimum loss of pressure
Types of intakes
a). Bellmouth - (subsonic-forward low speed)
b). Variable throat - (supersonic- concorde, fast jets)
c). Pitot - (subsonic-passenger aircraft)
d). Divided - (subsonic-fast jets)
Types of intake protection
a). Ice shield
b). Sand filters
c). Particles separator
d). Momentum separator
e). Intake grilles
Explain why helicopter use Bellmouth intake:
Due to its convergent shape will accelerate the airflow into the engine with minimum pressure loss. Entry velocity of air should be at MACH 0.5.
A bellmouth intake captures the required mass air flow and delivers it to the engine compressor at the correct speed.
Purpose of Intake grilles
Prevent the ingress of FOD
Purpose of ice shield
Fitted in icy conditions
Prevents ice in the intake.
Purpose of momentum separation
-for anti icing engine intakes
-passive devices
Purpose of sand Filter
Ambient air to enter the separator tubes of the filtering units which induces a spiral flow. Centrifugal force ensures that the sand passes through the extractor (outer) tube from where it is extracted by the ejectors. Sand is ejected overboard P2 air us fed through an electrically operated valve. Controlled by a sand filt- on/off switch.
Purpose of particle separator
Swirl vanes to guide inlet air into a swirling motion whereby inertial forces act on foreign particles moving them across the swirl away from the flow.
-Active device.
