C2 - Elements, Compounds and Mixtures Flashcards
What are the three states of matter?
1) solids
2) liquids
3) gases
What does the group correspond to?
The number of electrons the element has in its outer shell
What are the rows in the periodic table called?
Periods
What does each new period in the periodic table represent?
Another full outer shell of electrons
What are ions?
Charged particles
Why do atoms lose or gain electrons?
To get a full outer shell
What ions do metals form?
Positive
What ions do non-metals form?
Negative
Why do elements get more reactive as you go down groups 1 and 2?
You add electron shells, so they outer electrons get further away from the nucleus and it gets easier to remove them to form ions
Why do elements get less reactive as you go down groups 6 and 7?
You add electron shells, so they outer electrons get further away from the nucleus and it gets harder for the nucleus to attract extra electrons to form ions
What bond do metals and non-metals form?
Ionic
