C2- Bonding Flashcards
Which state of matter has the highest amount of energy?
Gas.
Which states of matter can be compressed?
Only gas.
How is an ion formed?
When an element loses or gains electrons, causing an imbalance of protons and electrons.
Describe metallic bonding.
Electrons are delocalised from metals, forming a bunch of positive metal ions surrounded by the negative electrons, the attraction between them holding them together.
Describe ionic bonding.
When electrons from a metal are transferred to a non-metal, forming two or more ions with an equal and opposite charge. This means they attract each other and form an ionic bond.
Describe covalent bonding.
When non-metals share electrons to gain full outer shells.
Do ionic compounds have a low boiling/ melting point?
No, they have a high boiling/ melting point.
Why are alloys less malleable than pure metals?
In an alloy, the layers are distorted and can’t slide over each other.
What is graphite made up of?
Layers of graphene, made from carbon.
What is a polymer?
A long chain of monomers.
Why is diamond so strong?
Each carbon has four bonds that must be overcome to destroy it.
What is a risk of nano particles?
Possible inhalation and damage to the body.
