C1- Atomic Structure Flashcards
What is an ion?
A charged particle with a different amount of protons to electrons.
What is an isotope?
An element with a different amount of neutrons.
What does the atomic number show?
The amount of protons.
What does the mass number show?
The amount of protons added with the amount of neutrons.
What is chromatography used for?
Separating mixtures.
What is filtration used for?
To separate solids from liquids.
What is evaporation used for?
To separate a soluble salt from a solution.
What is crystallisation used for?
To separate a soluble salt from a solution.
What is distillation used for?
To separate liquids in a mixture.
What is the method used to separate crude oil?
Fractional distillation.
Describe the Plum Pudding model.
A ball of positive charge with electrons scattered within.
What did Ernest Rutherford discover in regard to the atom?
The nucleus.
What was new about the Bohr Model?
It had electron shells.
Who discovered neutrons?
Chadwick.
How many electrons do Halogens have in the outer shell?
7.
Why are the Noble Gases unreactive?
They already have full outer shells.
What is group one also known as?
The Alkali Metals.
What are the properties of The Transition Metals?
They are strong, shiny, good conductors of heat and electricity and can also be used as catalysts.
Why does the reactivity of The Alkali Metals go up as you go down the periodic table?
As the electron shells are further out from the nucleus it is easier for them to be lost.
