C14 Flashcards
What is the endocrine system
Uses hormones to send info about changes in the environment around the body to bring a response
What are endocrine glands
A group of cells which are specialized to secrete chemicals - these chemicals are known as hormones.
What hormone is produced by the pineal gland
Melatonin
What hormone is produced by the thyroid gland
Thyroxine
What hormone is produced by the thymus gland
Thymosin
What hormone is produced by the pancreas
Insulin and glucagon
What hormone is produced by the ovary
Oestrogen
What 2 hormones are produced by the adrenal gland
Noradrenaline and adrenaline
What hormone is produced by the testis
Testosterone
What part of the blood are hormones carried in
Plasma
What is a target cell
The cell/cells that are acted on by the hormone to stimulate a response
What is a steroid hormone
Lipid soluble, so lass through cell membrane. The receptors act as a transcription factor which inhibits or stimulates the transcription of a gene
What is an example of a steroid hormone
Oestrogen
What is a non steroid hormone
Hydrophilic so cannot pass through the cell membrane. Instead bind to external receptors which trigger a cascade reaction mediated by chemicals called secondary messengers. Adrenaline is a good example
