C13.1 - 13.5 - Earths Atmosphere✔️ Flashcards
How much of the atmsophere is nitrogen?
78%
How much of the atmsophere is oxygen?
20%
What other proportions of various gases make up the atmosphere?
- Carbon dioxide
- water vapour
- noble gases
Why is there not a definite answer to how the atmosphere formed?
Evidence is limited because of the time scale of 4.6 billion years
Described the volcanic activity theory for the origin of the atmosphere?
During the first billions years of the earths existence there was intense volcanic activity that released gases that formed the early atmosphere and water vapour that condensed to form oceans
Why may there been small proportions of methane and ammonie in the atmosphere?
Volcanoes produced nitrogen which gradually built up in the atmosphere
What happend when the oceans formed (from the atmposphere and water vapour condensing)?what was produced?
Carbon dioxide dissolved in the water and carbonates were precipitaed producing sediments
How did oxygen increase?
Algae and plants produced oxygen that is now in the atmosphere by photosynthesis - algae first produced about 2.7 billion years ago
Symbol Equation for photosynthesis?
6Co₂ + 6H₂O - C₆H₁₂O₆ + 6O₂
Word equation for photosynthesis?
Cabron dioxide + water - (light) - glucose + oxygen
How did carbon dioxide levels decrease?
Alage and plants decreased the percentage of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere by photosynthesis - carbon dioxide was also decreased by the formation or sedimentary rock and fossil fuels that contain carbon
How did levels of ammonia and methane decrease in the atmosphere?
Metane and ammonia reacted with oxygen produced from photosynthesis
Importance of the greenhouse effect?
Natural greenhouse effect is important for maintaining temperatures high enough for use to survive
Explain the greenhouse effect with refrence to waves?
- sun emits short-wave length radiation (eg ultraviolet light which warms the earth)
- earth looses heat by emitting long wavelength radiation (eg thermal infared)
- greenhouse gases absorb some of long wavelength radiation
- they re-radiate this thermal radiation in all directions including back to earth
Two human activities which increase carbon dioxide?
- burning fossil fuels for electricity/running cars-
Propane + oxygen - carbon dioxide + water
-deforestation - cutting down trees reduces the amount of co2 absorbed
