C13- Chemical Analysis Flashcards
What is a pure substance?
A substance containing only one element
What is the difference between the melting point and boiling points of pure and impure substances?
Pure- one specific temperature
Impure- occur across a range of temperatures
What is a formulation?
A mixture of specific quantities of substances for a specific purpose
What are examples of formulations? (7)
Fuels, cleaning agents, paints, medicines, alloys, fertilisers, foods
What is chromatography?
A process to separate different components in a mixture of soluble substances
How is Rf value calculated?
Rf= distance moved by substance/ distance moved by solvent
What is the test for hydrogen?
Hold a lit splint near the gas
Gives a squeaky pop
What is the test for oxygen?
Hold a glowing splint near the gas
Relights
What is the test for chlorine?
Hold damp blue litmus paper near the gas
Will bleach it white
What are the phases in chromatography?
Mobile- solvent
Stationary- paper
What is the solvent front?
The top of where the solvent travels to
What will more soluble substances do in the solvent?
Travel further
What does pure substance do on a chromatogram?
Produce one spot
