C1.2 Atomic Structure Flashcards
What is an ion
An ion is a charged atom that has either a positive or negative charge due to losing or gaining an electron.
What is the atomic radius
It’s the radius of the atom
What is an isotope?
An isotope is a variation of an atom which has the same number of protons and electrons but a different number of neutrons. It is neutral.
What is the atomic mass?
It tells us the total number of protons and neutrons.
Where are the protons in the atom.
They are in the nucleus
What is bond length?
It is the length from one radius of the atom to the other.
What is the atomic number?
It is the number of protons.
Why can gases be compressed but solids and liquids cannot?
Gas particles have enough space around them to be compressed into a smaller volume but solids and liquids do not have this space.
Why are models altered?
When new ideas and theories are created which old models cannot properly explain, the model is changes
