C1.1 - The Particle Model Flashcards
What is a solid?
It is a state of matter that has a regular arrangement of particles that are very close together and vibrate around fixed positions. They cannot be compressed.
What is a liquid?
It is a state of matter that have a random arrangement of particles that are fairly close together and are able to move around each other. Liquids cannot be compressed.
What is a gas?
It is a state of matter that are in a random arrangement that are far apart and move quickly in all directions. Gases can be compressed.
What is an atom?
It is the smallest particle in an element. They have a nucleus containing protons and neutrons surrounded by electrons in the outer shells.
What is the particle model?
It is a scientific idea used to explain the properties of solids, liquids and gases.
What is a molecule?
It is two or more atoms joined together.
What are the limitations of the particles model?
Forces, space and sizes cannot be shown on the particle model
What are the two key properties of chemical reactions?
They create new substances and are difficult to reverse
What are the key properties of physical change?
No new material is formed and it is easy to reverse
