C1.1.3 Limitations of the particle model Flashcards
1
Q
Ratio of distance to diameter equation
A
ratio of distance to diameter = distance between atoms / diameter of atoms
2
Q
Electrostatic forces of attraction
A
Forces of attraction or repulsion between electrically charged particles
They weaken the further apart the particles are
3
Q
When are electrostatic forces weakest and strongest?
A
Strongest in solids
Weakest in gases
4
Q
Limitations of particle model
A
Do not take into account:
- the forces between particles
- the size of particles
- the space between particles
5
Q
Melting..?
A
Volume of substance usually increases a little when it melts as some forces of attraction are overcome and the particles can move around each other
6
Q
Evaporation…?
A
Volume increases a great deal when a liquid becomes a gas but some forces of attraction do remain
